Course Aim
With the direction of a highly qualified and competent facilitative trainer and using a range of different learning approaches, New Approach Training combines blended e-learning with classroom based ‘Directive Days’ which will encourage discussions and debates in relation to the subjects and associated assessment portfolio. The result – well equipped, dynamic professionals!
Who Should Apply
Anyone interested in a career in childcare. The Office for the Minister for Children has recommended that under the Early Care & Child Education Scheme (ECCE) this major certificate is now a pre-requisite and good practice qualification for anyone with a professional interest in early childhood education. It offers an excellent career route into supervisory or management roles within early childcare settings. Learners must have access to a professional childcare setting as assessments require a minimum of 100 hours work experience..

Students must complete these 4 Mandatory Modules:
Each module is broken down into units, with each unit working towards specific learning outcomes. Learners are assessed against the learning outcomes by way of completing a range of assessments . These range from skills demonstrations and research projects to report writing, the completion of learner journals and one short, structured examination. Assessment briefs are written by the Tutor in accordance with FETAC criteria and outcomes and allow for learner creativity. Overall Learners will further develop their existing skill-set to:
- Understand the theoretical development needs of children
- Apply the theory to the practical development needs of children
- Understand relevant and contemporary legislation when working with children
- Develop and apply the professional competencies required to respond effectively and appropriately to children
- Include motivational and inspirational skills when working in partnership with colleagues and families
Each module will demonstrate creative integration of the Aistear National Curriculum Framework and the Siolta Quality Standards whilst encouraging dynamic learning and teaching strategies.
Module 1 – Supervision in Childcare - D30178 (1 Credit)
- Acquire the skills, knowledge and competence required to supervise an early childhood education and care setting and support others in their role and performance.
- Recognise the benefits of being a reflective practitioner.
- Analyse relevant theory and relate it to the practice of supervision.
- The ability to lead, motivate and support a team.
- Devise strategies for working in partnership with parents/carers and external organisations.
Module 2 – Early Childhood Programmes - D30176 (1 Credit)
- Acquire an understanding of early childhood programmes.
- Understand the integrated role of learning, development and curriculum/programmes.
- Appreciate the range of features involved in effective early childhood programmes.
- Explore the role and responsibilities of the supervisor and the childcare worker in relation to programme practice.
- Appreciate the interrelationship between planning, implementation, evaluation and curriculum / programmes.
Module 3 - Child Development - D30005 (1 Credit)
- Recognise the capabilities and potential of the individual child across all domains of development.
- Carry out observation and evaluation techniques, and understand their implications for practice.
- Understand the influence of genetic, social, cultural and environmental factors on the overall development of the child.
- Understand the interdependency of all domains of development critically reflect on child development.
- Theory and its impact on early childhood education and care practice.
Module 4 - Social and Legal Issues in Childcare - D30177(1 Credit)
- Be familiar with international perspectives on early childhood education and care.
- Appreciate a range of factors influencing and impacting on early childhood education and care in Ireland.
- Develop an awareness of statutory regulations and voluntary guidelines, which relate directly to and impact on early childhood education and care settings.
- Understand and interpret social policy as it impacts on children and their families.
- Understand the procedures for dealing with suspected or actual abuse and the need for support for children, families and staff. Understand the principles of equality and its application in an early childhood education and care setting.
The fifth module must be completed if the learner does not have an award at FETAC Level 5 or equivalent. The Child Psychology module has been chosen as it was felt that this is an area of learning that encompasses the whole child in the early childhood setting. It includes outcomes such as the learners understanding the practical application of practical life and exercise to the child’s learning and development. It also provides opportunities for the learner to ‘move through the child’s’ practical learning experiences and apply them in the work cycle of the child’s day.
Module 5 - Child Psychology - N32957 (1 Credit)
- Analyse different theoretical models in terms of understanding child and adolescent development.
- Be familiar with different scientific methods in relation to child behaviour and child development.
- Appreciate a range of factors influencing and impacting upon a child’s psychological development.
- Understand and interpret social development as it impacts on school age children and their interaction with their peers and family.
- Recognise the significance of technology in a child’s/adolescent’s learning and development
- Understand the importance of transitions in influencing a sense of self.
Preferred entry requirements include experience of working in a childcare environment, understanding of how children learn and develop and/or a FETAC Level 5 award or equivalent.
There are a total of 11 assessments, including one exam, one learner journal, one presentation and the remainder in the form of reports, projects and assignments. The course, in its entirety, is very skills focused and requires learners to be in a position to observe children learning and developing, work in partnership with other Early Childcare Educators and encourage collaboration with children’s primary care givers. Learners will develop the competencies associated with planning, implementing and evaluating learning programmes and activities. They will develop an understanding of the significance of PLAY in child development and where the key and pioneering concepts of child learning and development came from and how they should be applied in the contemporary early childhood environment to ensure effective outcomes in the child’s learning and development.
Course Structure
New Approach Training deliver the course over 5’Directive Days’ within a four -to five month period. Each day reflects a module and the focus of the day is the structure and content required for each assessment. Research and primary learning must be completed by the learner independently and will require both on-the-job learning and study time. As New Approach adopt an enhanced blended learning approach, each learner has access to the Tutor/Mentor by mobile and email and can contact the Tutor/Mentor for guidance and clarification.
Each learner group agrees with the Tutor/Mentor a deadline for final submission of assessments which is always in line with the agreed schedule New Approach Training Ltd have with FETAC. Throughout the duration of the course learners can forward drafts to the Tutor/Mentor for feedback.

They work as mentors, guiding, directing and appreciating each learner.

Course Certification
Upon successful completion, you will receive a FETAC Level 6 Major Award in Advanced Supervision in Childcare (DCXXX).
