Course Aim
With the direction of a highly qualified and competent facilitative trainer and using a range of different learning approaches, New Approach Training combines blended e-learning with classroom based ‘Directive Days’ which will encourage discussions and debates in relation to the subjects and associated assessment portfolio. The result – well equipped, dynamic professionals!

Who Should Apply
The Level 5 award is the minimum requirement ALL childcare workers must now hold or be working towards achieving, particularly in early years settings where ECCE schemes are being provided.
The programme is for those working in a childcare setting and for those planning a career in the area of children’s care and/or education.  It is also for suitable for parents and guardians including foster parents, special needs assistants, child minders, those working in after-school care and all who wish to gain a better insight into children’s needs and behaviours. Professional career options for graduates of this programme include working in pre-school centres, day nurseries, crèches, childcare residential centres, hospitals and as nannies or au pairs. Learners must have access to a professional childcare setting as assessments require a minimum of 100 hours work experience.

Students must complete these 6 Mandatory Modules:
Each module is broken down into units, with each unit working towards specific learning outcomes.  Learners are assessed against the learning outcomes by way of completing a range of assessments . These range from skills demonstrations and research projects to report writing, the completion of learner journals and one short, structured examination.  Assessment briefs are written by the Tutor in accordance with FETAC criteria and outcomes and allow for learner creativity. Overall Learners will further develop their existing skill-set to:

  • Understand the theoretical development needs of children
  • Apply the theory to the practical development needs of children
  • Understand relevant and contemporary legislation when working with children
  • Develop and apply the professional competencies required to respond effectively and appropriately to children
  • Include motivational and inspirational skills when working in partnership with colleagues and families

Each module will demonstrate creative integration of the Aistear National Curriculum Framework and the Siolta Quality Standards whilst encouraging dynamic learning and teaching strategies.

 

Module 1 – Child Development - D30005 (1 Credit)

  • Recognise the capabilities and potential of the individual child across all domains of development.
  • Carry out observation and evaluation techniques, and understand their implications for practice.
  • Understand the influence of genetic, social, cultural and environmental factors on the overall development of the child.
  • Understand the interdependency of all domains of development critically reflect on child development.
  • Theory and its impact on early childhood education and care practice.

Module 2 - Early Childhood Programmes - D30176 (1 Credit)

  • Acquire an understanding of early childhood programmes.
  • Understand the integrated role of learning, development and curriculum/programmes.
  • Appreciate the range of features involved in effective early childhood programmes.
  • Explore the role and responsibilities of the supervisor and the childcare worker in relation to programme practice.

Module 3 - Work Experience  - W20008 (1 Credit)

  • Develop critical awareness of the changing nature of work
  • Set achievable goals for work experience
  • Utilise learning opportunities presented in the working environment
  • Apply work skills to consolidate learning in the vocational area
  • Understand how work is planned and organised at different  levels in a specific vocational area

Module 4 - Working in Childcare - D20153 (1 Credit)  

  • Be aware of the history and current status of childcare provision in Ireland
  • Recognise the importance of certain personal qualities and values  for those working with children
  • Understand the entitlements and responsibilities of a childcare employee
  • Promote the quality of opportunity and respect for diversity in the childcare setting
  • Appreciate the importance of working effectively with parents as part of a childcare team

Module 5 - Caring for Children (0-6 years) - D 20159 (1 Credit)

  • Understand the responsibilities involved in caring for children
  • Care for the physical needs of children 0-6 years
  • Promote good practice in caring for children
  • Maintain an environment for children  that is health, hygienic and safe

Module 6 - Communications - G20001 (1 Credit)

  • Develop an awareness of the essential role played by communication in human interaction
  • Acquire communication skills relevant  to vocational and personal development
  • Understand the communicative principles and practices involved in gathering and relaying information
  • Acquire the skills and confidence to convey and interpret meaning in writing, orally and visually
  • Develop a critical awareness of communications messages and media
  • Explain the use of modern communication and information technology, and its application in personal and vocational life


Students must complete these 2 Elective Modules:

Module 7 - Teamworking - G20034 (1 Credit)

  • Appreciate the role of Teamworking within organisations
  • Understand how teams are best constructed
  • Develop an awareness of different roles and personality types in Teamworking
  • Work effectively as a  team member
  • Develop a range of skills effective in Teamworking
  • Implement team actions.

Module 8 - Safety and Health at Work - D20165 (1 credit)

  • Understand the concepts of safety and health
  • Recognise the factors that influence health, safety and welfare
  • Apply the principles and procedures of health and safety to the workplace
  • Understand the importance of hazard identification and risk assessment
  • Promote safe working practices and procedures
  • Be familiar with core legislation in the area of safety, health and welfare.

Preferred entry requirements include experience of working in a childcare environment, understanding of how children learn and develop and/or a FETAC Level 5 award or equivalent.

Course Structure
The modules outlined above are complemented and consolidated through practical experience. Learners must complete the necessary practical work experience and may require Garda vetting. It is the responsibility of learners to arrange for Garda vetting with their work placement supervisor.
New Approach Training deliver the course over 12 ’Directive Days’ within a six month period. Each day reflects a module, or part thereof, and the focus of the day is the structure and content required for each assessment. Research and primary learning must be completed by the learner independently and will require both on-the-job learning and study time. As New Approach adopt an enhanced blended learning approach, each learner has access to the Tutor/Mentor by mobile and email and can contact the Tutor/Mentor for guidance and clarification.
Each learner group agrees with the Tutor/Mentor a deadline for final submission of assessments which is always in line with the agreed schedule New Approach Training Ltd have with FETAC. Throughout the duration of the course learners can forward drafts to the Tutor/Mentor for feedback.
New Approach Training Ltd only recruit highly qualified and competent facilitative trainers who not only have a detailed understanding of children’s learning and development but are also qualified in delivering programmes to adult learners. They work as mentors, guiding, directing and appreciating each learner. A combination of final written examinations and continuous assessment processes such as    assignments, collection of work, learner records, projects and skills demonstrations.

It is possible to gain exemptions from certain components of the course. If you already hold a FETAC award, or any childcare award, please contact us for details and we will advise you of available exemptions

Course Certification
Upon successful completion, you will receive a FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Childcare Major Award  (DCHSC).
