Basic Guarding Skills

Course aim
It is now a mandatory requirement to have a license in order to work within the Irish security industry. This license can be obtained through the Private Security Authority (PSA). In order to apply for a Static Guarding licence you must complete a static guarding training course. The basic Static Guarding course required is a level 4 minor award issued by the Further Education Training and Awards Council (FETAC).
This programme is specifically designed for security officers new to the industry or for any person wishing to start work in security with the basic knowledge to help them understand what is required of them to carry out everyday security tasks.

Who should apply
New and existing security officers.

All students attending the course must have with them:
• Two recent passport size photographs (less than 1 year old and signed on the back)
• PPS Number
• Proof of address

Course Content
The course content is as per the FETAC Module Descriptor (Guarding Skills Level 4 - C10266). It is broken down into four units:
• Unit 1. Background and Theory
• Unit 2. Legislation and Regulation
• Unit 3. Retail Security
• Unit 4. Practical and Emergency Procedures

There are two skills demonstrations that each candidate must complete. Each candidate must complete 4 specific practical skills related to workplace familiarisation. There is also a practical examination at the end of the course. The examination will be based on specific learning outcomes and will be one hour in duration. The format of the examination is 40 short answer questions using the tick or cross method. 1 mark each.

Course Certification

The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland. New Approach Training Ltd. is registered with FETAC to offer programmes leading to FETAC awards in the National Framework of Qualifications in Ireland.
